De Maagd

De Maagd, formally called Stadsschouwburg De Maagd, occupies one of the most striking buildings on the Grote Markt in Bergen op Zoom. The white facade belongs to a former Catholic church originally built in the 19th century and dedicated to the Holy Virgin, which is where the name "De Maagd" (The Virgin) comes from. After serving as a place of worship for well over a century, the building was deconsecrated and underwent an extensive renovation to transform it into a full scale theatre and concert venue. The conversion preserved much of the historic architecture while equipping the interior with modern stage technology, a combination that gives the hall a character quite unlike a purpose built performing arts center.

The venue sits in the historic heart of Bergen op Zoom and is considered one of the city's most prominent cultural landmarks. Its programming spans a broad range, taking in concerts across multiple genres, theatre productions and community events, reflecting its role as a general purpose municipal venue rather than a specialist music club.
