Grote Kerk

The Grote Kerk in Apeldoorn occupies a striking position on the Loolaan, one of the city's main avenues, close enough to the centre to be easily accessible yet distinct from the usual run of urban concert halls. The building itself carries significant history: a reformed church stood on this site from 1842, was completely destroyed by fire in 1890, and the current structure rose in its place. Also known as the Koninginnekerk, it functions today as a cultural and event venue rather than an exclusively religious space, and that dual identity shapes the range of programming it attracts.

Classical music and organ recitals form a natural fit given the acoustics and architectural character of the space, and the church has hosted solo piano concerts at a serious level, including performances associated with Wibi Soerjadi. Yet the programming is far broader than that. The venue has been used for multi stage events, with the building lending itself to configurations that blend historical atmosphere with modern production. Perhaps most strikingly, the Grote Kerk has hosted electronic music nights under the In De Kerk format, where house and hardhouse programming turned the nave into something closer to a club space. Dutch rock band BLØF has brought their Vreemde Wegen Tour to the venue as well, underlining that the Grote Kerk sits comfortably across genres.

That willingness to accommodate everything from organ recitals to rave nights gives the Grote Kerk a reputation as one of the more versatile and characterful spaces in the Gelderland region, where the weight of a nineteenth century church interior adds a dimension that purpose built concert halls simply cannot replicate.
