Bugge Wesseltoft is a Norwegian jazz pianist and producer from Porsgrunn who has spent decades pushing jazz into unexpected territory. He built his reputation in the early 1990s by steering away from the Nordic jazz traditions associated with the ECM label and toward what became known as nu jazz or future jazz, blending hip hop, club culture and electronic music into a genuinely new sound. His 1998 album Sharing raised eyebrows by leaning heavily on club DJs and scratchers, which was not exactly standard jazz practice at the time. His band New Conception of Jazz, formed in 1995, won a Spellemannprisen the very next year. Wesseltoft has collaborated with a striking range of artists over the years, from Jan Garbarek and Terje Rypdal to Billy Cobham and experimental vocalist Sidsel Endresen, with whom he recorded several albums including the award winning Duplex Ride. More recently he co founded the jazz trio Rymden alongside Dan Berglund and Magnus Öström, releasing their debut Reflections & Odysseys in 2019. His track "Existence" also found a wider audience through Philippe Harel's film adaptation of Michel Houellebecq's novel Extension du domaine de la lutte.
