De Oostkerk in Middelburg is a striking octagonal baroque domed church built in 1667, located on the Oostkerkplein in the heart of Zeeland's provincial capital. The building's unusual eight sided form and cupola set it apart from the more conventional Protestant churches of its era in the Netherlands. Over the centuries it has transitioned from its original religious function into a cultural venue, and it is now used regularly for concerts, lectures and exhibitions. As a concert space, the church draws on the acoustic and atmospheric qualities that come naturally with a seventeenth century domed interior. One notable element is the De Rijckere organ, a historic instrument that anchors the building's musical identity and makes it especially suited to classical and sacred repertoire. The venue has hosted acts ranging from choral and organ recitals through to world music, with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the South African choral group, among the internationally recognised names to have performed there. The building is also a listed monument, and sustainability work has been undertaken to make it more energy efficient while preserving its architectural character.
