The Schaffelaartheater in Barneveld occupies De Schaffelaar, a manor house with a long history that passed into municipal ownership in 1967 and was used for parties and community events for decades before being converted into a dedicated performance space. The theater officially opened in 2009 and sits on Theaterplein 1, making it the cultural centerpiece of the town. The building's origins as a manor give it a character that distinguishes it from purpose built concert halls, and the total performance and meeting space runs to just under 3,800 square feet, which places it firmly in the intimate, small scale category. The programming reflects a broad but locally focused mix. Past performers have included jazz vocalist Fay Claassen with pianist Cor Bakker, Dutch pop act 3JS, Tim Akkerman presenting his Buddy Holly Story show, and singer songwriter Simon Keizer, suggesting a program that runs from pop and singer songwriter evenings to theatrical music productions. The venue has also welcomed Joris Linssen, Vera Marijt, and Myrthe van de Weetering, pointing to a consistent interest in Dutch language artists and cabaret style acts alongside more straightforward concert formats. One of the more characteristic features is a recurring free live music session held every second Sunday of the month between October and March. These afternoon events take place in the foyer rather than the main hall, creating a relaxed setting where attendees can listen while eating and socializing, and children are explicitly welcome to join. Different local and regional bands appear each edition, and a bar featuring local partners operates alongside the music. It is a format that reflects the theater's role as a community rooted venue rather than a purely commercial concert operation.
