Stryper kondigt achttiende studioalbum aan en gaat op tournee

De Amerikaanse christelijke metalband Stryper heeft hun achttiende studioalbum aangekondigd. Het album draagt de titel Throne of Thorns en verschijnt op 25 september 2026 via Frontiers Music. Tegelijk met de aankondiging deelde de band de titelsong, voorzien van een officiële muziekvideo. Voor een band die al 43 jaar actief is, is dit opnieuw een bewijs van opmerkelijke productiviteit en vasthoudendheid.

De titelsong combineert een zwaar gitaarriff met een opvallend melodieuze solo die, met zijn theatrale en uitbundige stijl, vergelijkingen met Queen oproept. Frontman Michael Sweet licht de betekenis van de track als volgt toe: "'Throne of Thorns' is a powerful message. Christ is on the throne, and we are redeemed because of the crown of thorns that He endured. This song is a perfect representation of our 43 years and who we were, and who we are. Heavy yet melodic, classic yet modern, and 100% Stryper!" De religieuze boodschap vormt van oudsher het hart van alles wat Stryper maakt, en dat is op dit nieuwe werk niet anders.

Drummer Robert Sweet spreekt met zichtbare trots over het album: "Soon our new Stryper record will be out, and can you believe it? It's album number 18! I really believe you're all going to love it. Michael worked incredibly hard writing these songs and bringing everything together. Oz, Perry, and I also worked hard to make this, what I feel is our best record yet. I'm confident that once you hear it, you'll agree. Thank you all for your incredible loyalty and for continuing to support what we do." Gitarist Oz Fox voegt daaraan toe: "I'm really happy with the final outcome of this record and of the heart that went into it. Michael continues to pour everything he has into the music and the message; Robert brings the power and energy that has always been the pulse of Stryper; Perry's musicianship, vocal talents, and dedication are second to none, and I'm grateful to be on this journey with all of them."

Het album telt elf nummers, waaronder naast de titelsong ook tracks als Here In Your Heart, Carry The Flame, Beautifully Broken en het slotnummer Shadowbreaker. Bassist Perry Richardson omschrijft de inspiratiebron achter het werk: "The best music doesn't come from comfort. It comes from living, struggling, growing, and refusing to quit. I hope these songs find you exactly when you need them."

Naast de plaat heeft Stryper ook een uitgebreide tournee door de Verenigde Staten bekendgemaakt. De zomerreeks begint op 17 juli in Arlington, Texas, met verdere shows in Houston en San Antonio. Op 19 september staat de band ook op het Loud and Proud Festival 2026 in het Duitse Wissen, wat voor Europese fans de dichtstbijzijnde kans biedt de band live te zien. Daarna volgt een uitgebreide najaarstoer die op 29 september van start gaat in Derry, New Hampshire, en op 25 oktober afsluit in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Op 5 december staat nog een optreden gepland in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Throne of Thorns volgt op het kerstalbum The Greatest Gift of All, dat de band in november 2025 uitbracht, eveneens via Frontiers Music.
