98 Degrees set themselves apart from the late nineties boy band wave by insisting they were singers, songwriters, and producers, not a label assembled pop product. Signed to Motown after crashing a Boyz II Men concert to hand over a demo tape, the four piece built their sound around R&B and soul influences rather than pure pop gloss. Their breakthrough came with the 1998 album 98 Degrees and Rising, which went four times platinum and delivered top five hits including "The Hardest Thing" and "Because of You". Their biggest chart moment came as guest artists on Mariah Carey's "Thank God I Found You", which hit number one and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. All told, the group racked up eight top 40 singles in the US and sold over 15 million records worldwide. After going on hiatus, they reunited in 2012 and have continued making music since.
