Few debut albums land as hard as The Lexicon of Love, the 1982 record that put Sheffield's ABC firmly on the map. Produced by Trevor Horn, it hit number one on the UK Albums Chart and unleashed a run of singles including "Poison Arrow", "The Look of Love" and "All of My Heart". The band blended synth pop with disco and rock in a way that felt both lush and precise, and their high concept music videos, like the spy pastiche Mantrap directed by Julien Temple, matched the ambition of the music. Fronted by Martin Fry, the only constant member through all the lineup changes, ABC kept releasing through the decade with Beauty Stab, How to Be a Zillionaire! and Alphabet City, the last of which returned them to the UK Top 10 after Fry recovered from Hodgkin lymphoma. They racked up ten UK and five US top 40 hits between 1981 and 1990. In 2016, Fry put out The Lexicon of Love II, a sequel to the debut that was warmly received by critics and fans alike.
