About
Ablaye Cissoko is a Senegalese kora player, singer and composer whose music sits at a fascinating crossroads between West African griot tradition and jazz. He has taken that sound across the globe, performing in countries from Norway to Russia to Canada. His long running partnership with trumpeter Volker Goetze produced three albums together, starting with Sira in 2008, which cracked the top 10 on the CMJ world music radio chart early in 2009. Their collaboration even spilled into film: Goetze directed a 2011 documentary called Griot, following Cissoko's mission to keep the thousand year old kora tradition alive. Beyond that pairing, Cissoko has worked with the Constantinople ensemble, blending his West African roots with traditional Persian music on Jardins migrateurs and Traversées. His solo catalogue stretches back to 2003, and more recent projects include a 2022 album called Instant with Cyrille Brotto and a 2025 release titled Djiyo.
