About
Aidan Mikdad is a Dutch pianist who has packed a remarkable amount into his early career. He won the Concertgebouw Young Talent Award at fifteen, went on to study with Naum Grubert at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, graduating with the highest possible distinction, and later earned a master's degree cum laude from the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he also received The Queen's recommendation for excellence. Competition results aside, it is his live performances that have consistently left the strongest impression. His programme of Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 3 and Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata puts two large scale monuments of the repertoire side by side. Chopin built his reputation on intimate salon pieces, nocturnes, mazurkas and études, but the Third Sonata is something altogether grander: Romantic in scope yet deeply lyrical and shot through with melancholy. Beethoven's Waldstein is technically ferocious and emotionally volatile, the kind of piece that keeps both performer and audience on edge from start to finish.
