Sardonic, literate, and quietly devastating, Aimee Mann has built one of the most distinctive voices in American rock over four decades. Her knack for character studies in song was there from the start: "Voices Carry", the 1985 top ten hit she wrote for new wave band 'Til Tuesday, already showed her sharp eye for people stuck in difficult situations. When the band split in 1990 she went solo, and while her first two albums earned critical praise, wider recognition came through Paul Thomas Anderson's film Magnolia in 1999, for which she wrote the soundtrack. The song "Save Me" landed nominations for both an Oscar and a Grammy. She famously took matters into her own hands after label trouble with Geffen, releasing Bachelor No. 2 on her own SuperEgo Records in 2000 and proving an artist could thrive outside the major label system. She later teamed up with Ted Leo as the Both in 2014, and when a musical project called Girl, Interrupted was delayed by the pandemic, she released those songs as the album Queens of the Summer Hotel in 2021. Her album Mental Illness earned her the Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2017. Beyond music she also paints, makes comics, and has popped up on screen in everything from The Big Lebowski to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
