Albert Hammond built a serious reputation as one of pop's most versatile behind the scenes architects. The London born, Gibraltar raised singer songwriter scored his own hit with "It Never Rains in Southern California" but his reach goes far beyond that. He co wrote "The Air That I Breathe" for The Hollies, "One Moment in Time" for Whitney Houston, "When I Need You" for Leo Sayer, and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" for Starship, among many others. Tina Turner and Julio Iglesias also recorded his songs, which gives you a sense of how wide his catalogue runs. Hammond formed The Family Dogg with Steve Rowland back in 1966, and his solo work sits firmly in the pop rock and soft rock territory he helped define across several decades. Gibraltar honoured him with a commemorative stamp series in 2009, and in 2015 he received the Ivor Novello Award for his entire body of work. He is also the father of Albert Hammond Jr., guitarist for The Strokes.
