About
Also known as: Albert Hammond Jr, Albert Hammond Jr.
As the rhythm guitarist for the Strokes, Albert Hammond Jr. has been a key part of one of the most influential rock bands to come out of New York in the early 2000s. His playing style leans toward emotional, bluesy melodic work, and he has a habit of holding his guitar unusually high, close to horizontal, partly so he can move around more freely on stage. Fashion is a genuine passion too: he is rarely seen without a three piece suit on tour, and Julian Casablancas credits him for shaping the band's whole visual identity. Beyond the Strokes, Hammond has built a solid solo catalogue across five albums, starting with Yours to Keep in 2006 and running through to Melodies on Hiatus in 2023. The solo records let him stretch out beyond the tight garage rock of the Strokes, though that wiry, post punk energy is never far away. He also co wrote the Strokes track Automatic Stop and penned several of the more instrumental pieces in the band's catalogue.
