Few artists have stacked up a debut run quite like Alicia Keys. Her first album, Songs in A Minor, sold over 12 million copies and swept five Grammys at once, built around the piano driven smash "Fallin'" that still gets cited as her signature. What set her apart from the start was the classical training underneath the R&B: a genuinely skilled pianist writing her own material, which made the whole thing feel less like a manufactured pop moment and more like the real deal. She kept that momentum going across a string of albums, from The Diary of Alicia Keys through As I Am and beyond, racking up number ones including the Jay Z collab "Empire State of Mind" and the Bond theme "Another Way to Die" with Jack White. Over 90 million records sold later, she has also stepped into film, written a Broadway musical in Hell's Kitchen that took home two Tony Awards, and co founded the HIV and AIDS organisation Keep a Child Alive.
