As the vocalist and pianist of the Dresden Dolls, Amanda Palmer built her reputation on a style she and bandmate Brian Viglione called punk cabaret, blending alternative rock with dark theatrical energy. The duo formed after a chance meeting at a Halloween party in 2000, and recorded their debut album with producer Martin Bisi before even signing to a label. Palmer has always pushed performance beyond just music, whether through the Dirty Business Brigade at live shows or her theatrical production The Onion Cellar, based on a Günter Grass story, staged with the American Repertory Theater. Her 2008 solo debut Who Killed Amanda Palmer, produced by Ben Folds, showed she was just as compelling on her own, and she went on to release records under several projects including the fictional conjoined twins concept Evelyn Evelyn with collaborator Jason Webley. She was also among the earliest musicians to lean heavily into crowdfunding, well before it became standard practice. The Dresden Dolls reunited in 2022 and toured the US in 2023, with a new album in the works.
