About
The Amaris Quartet is a young Amsterdam based string quartet with a clear affinity for the great chamber music repertoire. In one of their programmes they take on Schubert's fourteenth string quartet, the work known as Death and the Maiden, built around the melody from his 1817 song of the same name. That song's theme runs through the entire quartet, appearing literally in the second movement and echoing through the rest of the work. It is a piece widely regarded as one of Schubert's most ambitious achievements, the moment where he stepped out from Beethoven's shadow, and the Amaris Quartet treat it as the centrepiece it deserves to be.
