About
German baritone Samuel Hasselhorn won the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2018, and since then he has become a regular presence on major concert stages. Critics single out not just the clarity and warmth of his voice but also his gift for text interpretation and his ability to translate musical drama into subtle psychological shading. He moves equally between the concert hall and the opera house, with a particular devotion to the art song repertoire. Together with pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz, he has been working on a Schubert project focused on the songs from the composer's final years, performing and recording them as a duo. Schubert wrote around six hundred songs, a staggering output, and essentially lifted the German Lied to a level his successors could rarely match. His songs connect the everyday with the existential, weaving together love, loss, grief and hope in compact forms that still feel immediate and personal.
