Melody Gardot's smoky contralto and cinematic, understated style set her apart from the moment her early bedroom recordings started circulating on a Philadelphia radio station. Those songs, written during recovery from a serious cycling accident that left her with head, spinal, and pelvic injuries, became the EP Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions and eventually landed her a deal with Verve Records. Her debut Worrisome Heart established her minimalist, mood driven approach, and My One and Only Thrill, produced by Larry Klein, broke her to a wider European audience with lush orchestral arrangements. She's never stayed in one place sonically. The Absence pulled in bossa nova and North African textures, Currency of Man leaned hard into blues and soul, and 2020's Sunset in the Blue, again with Klein and arranger Vince Mendoza, brought a rich orchestral jazz feel. She still performs in dark sunglasses and often seated, managing lingering sensory sensitivities from her injuries, and has been a vocal advocate for music therapy ever since it helped rebuild her own life.
