Lizz Wright has a voice that tends to stop people in their tracks, drawing comparisons to Norah Jones while sitting comfortably in a world where jazz, gospel, soul and blues all overlap. Signed to Verve Records in 2002, she made a serious first impression with Salt in 2003, which climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz chart. Her follow up, Dreaming Wide Awake, blended jazz and pop with folk textures and hit No. 1 on that same chart across 2005 and 2006. She has kept good company throughout her career, lending her voice to sessions with David Sanborn, Toots Thielemans, Meshell Ndegeocello and Taj Mahal alongside Keb' Mo', among others. The gospel roots run deep too: her 2010 album Fellowship leaned heavily into gospel standards. Her discography now stretches to eight solo records, with Shadow arriving in 2024 on Blues and Greens/Virgin.
