About

Manchester's Amplifier occupy a strange and wonderful corner of rock, drawing comparisons to Soundgarden, Tool, Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath all at once, filtered through something genuinely their own. Guitarist Sel Balamir's layered effect pedals, Matt Brobin's intricate drumming and a knack for sprawling atmospheric compositions give the band a sound that's hard to pin down and harder to forget. Debut album Amplifier landed in 2004 on Music for Nations and made a strong impression on UK critics, and the band has kept building from there. Their catalogue now stretches to eight studio albums, including the ambitious double album The Octopus, the chart bothering Mystoria and Echo Street, the first record to crack the German Albums Chart. They set up their own label Rockosmos to stay independent and have used it to release their own music as well as sign other acts. Despite sitting firmly in the cult following category rather than the mainstream, they've shared stages with Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Anathema, which tells you something about the company they keep.
