About
The Amstel Big Band brings together semi professional musicians and students from the jazz department of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, making it an ensemble with both academic roots and serious real world chops. The band operates under the direction of bassist, arranger and composer Sven Schuster, who studied at the Musikhochschule in Graz and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and has played alongside names such as Han Bennink, Jim Hall and Mel Lewis. Conductor and trumpeter Kurt Weiss, also affiliated with the Royal Conservatoire, rounds out the leadership team. With a sound that leans toward the groovy end of the big band spectrum, the ensemble is well suited to ambitious concert projects and has collaborated with guest artists on specially arranged programmes featuring original compositions reworked for full big band.
