About
Austrian mezzo soprano Angelika Kirchschlager spent decades as one of the most respected voices at the Vienna State Opera, which she joined in 1993 making her debut as Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro. Her range across opera and lieder made her a fixture at events like the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg festival in Vorarlberg, and she worked regularly with pianist Helmut Deutsch and baritone Simon Keenlyside. One of her career highlights was creating the role of Sophie in the world premiere of Nicholas Maw's Sophie's Choice at the Royal Opera House in London in 2002, a production she also brought to Washington and Vienna. In 2024 she announced her retirement from the stage, stepping away to focus fully on her professorship for song, oratorio and concert at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. It feels like a natural next chapter for a singer whose artistry was always as much about depth and nuance as it was about the spotlight.
