About
Angelika Niescier is a Polish German saxophonist who has spent years pushing the boundaries of European jazz. Her playing is known for its restless energy, a wide tonal palette and serious technique, and she tours internationally. The prizes on her shelf include the Deutscher Jazzpreis, the WDR Jazz Award, the Albert Mangelsdorff Prize and the Echo Jazz, plus several quarterly prizes from the German Record Critics' Award. She has also held artist in residence posts in Moers in Germany, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Tarabya in Turkey. One of her notable partnerships is a duo with Brazilian drummer Mariá Portugal, where free improvisation swings from thunderous noise to near silence within seconds, full of sparks and sharp turns.
