About
Darius Jones has spent the better part of two decades pushing the saxophone into territory that sits somewhere between avant garde jazz, experimental composition, and pure sound exploration. The Virginia born saxophonist landed in New York in 2005 and quickly built a reputation for work that cuts across solo performance, chamber ensembles, modern dance, and multimedia projects. His debut as a leader, Man'ish Boy (A Raw & Beautiful Thing), came out on AUM Fidelity in 2009, and his output has consistently landed on best of lists in publications like NPR Music, The Wire, and PopMatters. His collaborators have included Matthew Shipp and the punk jazz outfit Little Women, and his live performances have earned praise in The New York Times. The 2021 solo saxophone record Raw Demoon Alchemy (a lone operation) on Northern Spy Records showed a more stripped back side of his practice, followed by the LP fLuXkit Vancouver co released in 2023. Jones also teaches, joining the faculty at Wesleyan University in 2024 as Assistant Professor of Music.
