Anna von Hausswolff (SE)

About

Also known as: Anna Michaela Ebba Electra von Hausswolff, 안나 본 하우스볼프

Anna von Hausswolff has built a reputation as one of the most singular voices in contemporary dark music, largely on the strength of her relationship with the pipe organ. The Gothenburg born singer and composer wraps her cathedral scale sound around gothic art pop, drone, and post metal textures, drawing comparisons to Diamanda Galás, Kate Bush, and Siouxsie Sioux. Her 2018 album Dead Magic, recorded on the pipe organ at Copenhagen's Marble Church and produced by Sunn O)))'s Randall Dunn, was hailed as her darkest and most ambitious work yet. Her 2020 follow up All Thoughts Fly went even further into organ territory, recorded on the largest quarter comma meantone organ in the world, housed in Gothenburg. She's not shy about collaboration either: she contributed vocals to Wolves in the Throne Room's Thrice Woven, appeared on Swans' Leaving Meaning alongside her sister Maria, and shows up on the Sunn O))) live album Metta, Benevolence. Her concerts have stirred real controversy too, with fundamentalist Catholic groups in France demanding cancellations over claims her music is satanic, even when the planned shows were purely instrumental. That kind of friction seems almost fitting for an artist whose work genuinely unsettles as much as it moves.
