About
Also known as: Anne Charlotte Clark, Anne Clarck
Anne Clark carved out a genuinely singular space in the new wave and electronic scene by doing something most of her peers never attempted: she speaks rather than sings, laying her poetry over electronic and synth textures to conjure a world of urban dread, loneliness, and unease. Coming out of Croydon, she released her debut album The Sitting Room in 1982 and built a reputation through records like Pressure Points, made with John Foxx, and the collaborations with keyboardist David Harrow across Changing Places, Joined Up Writing, and Hopeless Cases. Tracks like Our Darkness and Sleeper in Metropolis became the closest things she has to anthems, and her influence on the electronic and spoken word crossover is hard to overstate. She took a sharp detour into acoustic territory in the mid 1990s, including a live recording at the Passionskirche in Berlin and a set of Rainer Maria Rilke poems alongside Martyn Bates, before returning to her electronic roots after 2002. The Smallest Acts of Kindness in 2008 showed she still had plenty to say.
