Annett Louisan is one of the few German artists to make chanson style songs a high profile thing. Her debut album Bohème stayed on the German charts for almost a year and peaked at number three, and her first single Das Spiel, with its tangle of the child, the woman and the emancipated career woman, set the tone for lyrics that dig into love, failure and disappointment. The sound leans on blues, soul, jazz and swing, with her breathy voice kept front and centre by unfussy backing. Her second album moved away from straight pop towards the French German chanson tradition, folding in bal musette, tango and bossa nova rhythms. Much of the songwriting craft comes from producer Frank Ramond's lyrics and the compositions of Hardy Kayser and Matthias Hass. In 2005 she picked up an ECHO as Female Artist of the Year in national rock and pop, plus a Goldene Stimmgabel for best female solo artist.
