About
Also known as: Anohni Hegarty, Antony, Antony Hegarty
ANOHNI won the Mercury Music Prize back when she was still performing as Antony and the Johnsons. That album, I Am a Bird Now, came out in 2005 with guest turns from Lou Reed, Boy George, Rufus Wainwright and Devendra Banhart. The singer, songwriter and visual artist grew out of New York's underground performance scene, where she founded the collective Blacklips. Her debut album came out in 2000 on David Tibet's Durtro label. The music runs from fragile chamber pop to full orchestral stagings, including a laser lit show with the Manchester Camerata and concerts with symphonies across Europe. In 2016 she became the first openly transgender performer nominated for an Academy Award, for the song Manta Ray from Racing Extinction. Her solo debut Hopelessness followed that year to wide critical praise, earning a Brit Award and another Mercury nomination. In 2023 she released My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross as Anohni and the Johnsons.
