Few bands can claim a spot in the "Big Four" of thrash metal, but Anthrax earned theirs. Formed in New York City in 1981, they helped define the East Coast thrash sound and stacked up a run of essential records through the late 80s and early 90s. Among the Living from 1987 is still held up as one of the genre's finest, and Persistence of Time scored them their first Grammy nomination. When John Bush came aboard in 1992, Sound of White Noise cracked the Billboard 200 top ten, their biggest chart moment yet. Anthrax also proved they could move across genre lines without losing credibility, most memorably teaming up with Public Enemy on a version of Bring the Noise that genuinely rattled both worlds. Joey Belladonna, who left and rejoined the band more than once, helped deliver Worship Music in 2011 to strong reviews after a long gap, and For All Kings followed in 2016. Scott Ian is the one constant through it all, with bassist Frank Bello and drummer Charlie Benante locking down a rhythm section that has kept things heavy for over four decades.
