About
Arcana was a short lived jazz fusion supergroup built around bassist Bill Laswell and drummer Tony Williams, with guitarist Derek Bailey completing the original trio in 1995. Their debut, The Last Wave, came out in 1996 on DIW, and Bailey left soon after. For the follow up, Arc of the Testimony (Axiom/Island, 1997), the guitar parts were handled by guests Nicky Skopelitis and Buckethead. The album also pulled in Pharoah Sanders on tenor saxophone, Byard Lancaster on alto sax and bass clarinet, and Graham Haynes on cornet. Laswell, meanwhile, was working with a serious arsenal of basses, from six string to eight string and fretless, plus synthesizer and sound effects. The band ended after the second record, following the death of Williams in February 1997.
