Formed in 1995 by Pendragon keyboardist Clive Nolan and Mick Pointer, the original drummer of Marillion, Arena have spent three decades quietly becoming one of the more dependable names in neo progressive rock. Their sound has shifted over the years from something close to Fish era Marillion into territory that blends symphonic grandeur with harder rock edges, and AllMusic tagged them as one of the dominant neo prog groups of the 1990s. The Virginia Water outfit has put out ten studio albums, with The Theory of Molecular Inheritance arriving in 2022. The lineup has rotated plenty over the years, with guitarist John Mitchell of Frost* and vocalist Damian Wilson among the longer serving members alongside the founding pair of Nolan and Pointer. Nolan writes most of the lyrics, giving the band a consistent creative core even as the personnel around him have changed. With a catalogue stretching back nearly three decades and live releases to match, Arena reward anyone willing to dig in.
