About

Also known as: Artvark

Four Dutch saxophonists, Rolf Delfos, Bart Wirtz, Mete Erker and Peter Broekhuizen, make up Artvark Saxophone Quartet, a group that has been pushing the boundaries of what four saxophones can do together for more than two decades. Their work spans national and international stages, and they have built a reputation for adventurous collaborations that go well beyond straight jazz. Delfos plays alto sax and bass clarinet, Wirtz handles alto sax and a Swanee slide saxophone, Erker plays tenor sax alongside a Lyon and Healy slide sax, and Broekhuizen anchors the low end on baritone sax and another Swanee slide instrument. The quartet has developed a body of work that pairs music with broader artistic concepts. Their album Mother of Thousand was followed by Four Fathers, the second part of a planned trilogy. For that project they collaborated with a visual artist, a set designer, a lighting designer and a sound designer to shape the performance into a full sensory experience, a fitting reflection of their guiding question: just how far can the world of four saxophones stretch?
