Dutch trumpeter Eric Vloeimans occupies a rare spot where jazz and pop genuinely overlap, with his trumpet playing described as warm and melodic rather than flashy or dominant. Born in Huizen, he honed his craft in New York studying with Donald Byrd and played in big bands led by Mercer Ellington and Frank Foster, before building one of the most varied discographies in Dutch jazz. His 1999 album Bitches and Fairy Tales, recorded with Marc Johnson, Joey Baron, and John Taylor, won the Edison Award, and he later picked up the Boy Edgar Award for Umai and the Gouden Notekraker for Heavens Above. His collaborations reach well beyond the jazz world. He contributed to Armin van Buuren's Embrace album in 2015, toured with Syrian clarinettist Kinan Azmeh, and has worked extensively with Holland Baroque, blending baroque music with his trumpet improvisations. Recent uploads suggest he has been arranging pieces for baroque ensemble, continuing that long running conversation between his jazz sensibility and early music.
