Avi Shmailov, who records and performs as Astrix, has built his reputation on a strain of progressive psychedelic trance that sits somewhere between full on psytrance and the more club friendly end of the spectrum. Born in Soviet Georgia and raised in Tel Aviv, he signed to HOMmega Productions in 2002 with his debut album Eye to Eye and has been a fixture of the global psy scene ever since. His sound, described by one author as having "crisp spacious acoustics", leans on driving basslines and ascending melodies, and his Psychedelic Academy Mix is often pointed to as the clearest snapshot of his style. He climbed to 18th place in DJMag's Top 100 DJs in 2007, a moment that reflected a broader surge of Israeli electronic artists in the global rankings. Festivals like Creamfields, Love Parade and Dance Valley have all had him on the bill, and his album Red Means Distortion arrived in 2010, followed eventually by He.art in 2016.
