About
Also known as: Los Aterciopelados
Aterciopelados, the Bogotá duo of vocalist Andrea Echeverri and bassist Héctor Buitrago, have spent three decades blending Colombian rock with llanera rhythms, bolero, electronic touches, and whatever else suits the song. Their hit "Bolero Falaz" topped Canal Viva Colombia's list of the 1,000 most important songs in Colombian rock history, and it was the track that first broke them on MTV Latin America. They have picked up four Latin Grammy Awards from eight nominations, including Best Alternative Album for their 2006 record Oye and again for Claroscura in 2018. The band has never shied away from big subjects. Songs tackle political injustice, women's rights, and environmental destruction, and the United Nations recognised them for their advocacy against gun violence in Colombia. Their album Rio centred on access to clean water as a fundamental right. Guest appearances over the years have ranged from avant garde guitarist Marc Ribot to rapper Goyo of Choc Quib Town, showing how far their musical curiosity stretches.
