Few songs from the indie rock era burrowed as deep into pop culture as "Boston" by Augustana, a track that turned up on Scrubs, Smallville, One Tree Hill, and even got hummed by Leonard Hofstadter in the very first season of The Big Bang Theory. The band formed in Illinois around frontman Daniel Layus and built their reputation on the 2005 album All the Stars and Boulevards, which hit number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and pushed "Boston" to number 34 on the Hot 100. The years since have seen plenty of lineup changes, with Layus eventually becoming the sole constant under the Augustana name. The band released Life Imitating Life in 2014 through Razor and Tie, followed by the EP Side A in 2015, and Layus stepped out under his own name for the solo record Dangerous Things in 2016. Through all the shifting rosters, the core sound has stayed rooted in melodic, emotionally direct rock with a roots sensibility that made "Boston" resonate in the first place.
