Austin Mahone built his early fanbase posting YouTube covers from San Antonio, Texas, and that grassroots momentum was enough to land him a deal with Chase Records and Republic Records in 2012. His first proper singles, "Say Somethin'" and "Say You're Just a Friend" featuring Flo Rida, both went gold, and "What About Love" put him on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. The real commercial breakthrough came with "Mmm Yeah" featuring Pitbull, which went platinum and peaked at number 49 on the Hot 100, leading his EP The Secret to reach number five on the Billboard 200. After moving to Pitbull's Mr. 305 Inc. label, Mahone shifted his focus toward Japan, where his single "Dirty Work" went platinum and his debut studio album landed on the Oricon chart. He kept releasing mixtapes and EPs through the late 2010s, then made a pretty sharp left turn with his 2023 album A Lone Star Story, trading pop and R&B for country music entirely.
