Avantasia is the brainchild of Tobias Sammet, frontman of German power metal band Edguy, and it operates on a scale most metal acts can only dream about. The name blends Avalon and fantasia to describe a world beyond human imagination, which pretty much sums up the ambition on display. What started in 1999 as a studio only concept project has grown into a full blown touring operation, with nine studio albums and a guest list that reads like a who's who of heavy metal: Alice Cooper, Klaus Meine of Scorpions, Michael Kiske, Floor Jansen, Dee Snider and dozens more have all stepped up to the mic. Every Avantasia record is a concept album, and the storytelling spans multiple entries at a time, like The Wicked Trilogy across three albums or the two part Metal Opera that launched the whole thing. The live shows run close to three hours and have sold out arenas worldwide. The latest chapter, Here be Dragons, keeps the tradition alive, and the project shows no sign of running out of either collaborators or ideas.
