About
Ave Sangria are one of the most fascinating artifacts of Brazil's 1970s psychedelic underground. The Recife band recorded their self titled debut in Rio de Janeiro in May 1974, only for the Brazilian military government to censor and pull it from shelves after just six weeks, objecting to the lyrical content of the song "Seu Waldir". That kind of story tends to turn a record into a legend, and Ave Sangria's debut did exactly that. After sitting dormant for four decades, the band reunited in 2014 to celebrate the album's 40th anniversary and eventually released Vendavais in 2019, a second album built entirely from songs composed between 1972 and 1974 that had never seen the light of day. The Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte named it one of the 25 best Brazilian albums of the first half of 2019. Three founding members, Almir de Oliveira, Marco Polo and Paulo Rafael, anchored the record, making it a genuine continuation rather than just a nostalgia trip.
