Avery Friedman makes the kind of quietly affecting singer songwriter music that sticks around after the song ends. Originally from Cleveland and now based in Brooklyn, she put out her debut album New Thing via Audio Antihero in April 2025, recorded with collaborators James Chrisman, Felix Walworth, Ryan Cox, and Malia DelaCruz. The album pulled in praise from NPR Music's All Songs Considered, No Depression, The Line of Best Fit, and Post Trash, among others, and writer Hanif Abdurraqib put it on his Albums of the Year list. No Depression later named her in their best queer roots music of 2025 roundup. Before the album even landed, she was placing demos on benefit compilations for causes like the Entertainment Community Fund and Palestinian relief, and she kept that up after the release too, contributing a new song called Underbelly to a Palestine Children's Relief Fund comp in September 2025.
