About
Also known as: Djurre de Haan
Awkward I is a Dutch project fronted by songwriter Djurre de Haan, whose songs tend to read like dispatches from some inward journey. The album Unalaska grew out of a single word he stumbled on in an old travel diary, a place name that seemed to pull him toward it. Rather than a trip to Alaska, it became a kind of expedition into his own head, moving at roughly the pace of a horse. Lines like the one about riding into town while chewing on dead bird metaphors give a sense of his wry, slightly puzzling lyrical style. De Haan also has a day job of sorts, arranging and composing music commissioned for film and theatre productions. Between those jobs, he has always kept one eye on the next record, something just out of view. The songs wait for the right words and notes to arrive, which he treats as active waiting rather than sitting back.
