Ayreon is the brainchild of Dutch multi instrumentalist and producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen, a project that treats the album format as a full blown rock opera. Each release comes with its own cast of vocalists, each representing a different character in a sprawling science fiction saga that spans multiple albums and connects across storylines. The music blends progressive rock and metal with folk instruments like mandolins, sitars and didgeridoos alongside classical strings, creating something genuinely hard to pin down. Some of the most recognizable names in rock and metal have lent their voices to Ayreon over the years, from Bruce Dickinson to Floor Jansen and Anneke van Giersbergen. Live shows are rare by design since coordinating that many guest musicians is no small feat, but when they do happen, fans travel from dozens of countries to see them. The 2017 run at poppodium 013 in Tilburg drew people from over 50 nations, which says everything about the cult following this project has built.
