About
Also known as: Azis
Azis is the self styled "King of Pop Folk", a Bulgarian Romani singer who built his name on chalga, the Bulgarian take on pop folk, and became a big deal across the Balkans and Eastern Europe. He has traded vocals with a long list of regional stars, from Bulgarians like Gloria, Sofi Marinova and Preslava to Yugoslav names such as Jelena Karleuša, Severina and Indira Radić. His 2011 single "Sen Trope" travelled far beyond Bulgaria, inspiring covers and adaptations in Greek, Romanian and Serbian, and "Hop" got the same treatment from Giorgos Tsalikis. In 2012 activists even borrowed the video for "Mrazish" to deface a Russian court website. Azis sang backing vocals for Mariana Popova's "Let Me Cry" at Eurovision 2006, and he has been a fixture on Bulgarian TV too, from reality shows to hosting his own late night talk show, finishing second on Kato dve kapki voda.
