About
Also known as: Azimuth
Azymuth named themselves after a Marcos Valle song, which tells you something about where they come from: deep in the Brazilian session scene, with a sound that blurs jazz, funk, and samba into something they call "Samba Doido" or "Crazy Samba". The Rio de Janeiro trio formed in 1973 and broke through internationally with "Jazz Carnival" in 1979, a track off Light as a Feather that hit number 19 on the UK Singles Chart. Their run on Milestone Records through the 1980s built a serious catalog, and since the mid 1990s they have called Far Out Recordings home. Their music proved irresistible to remixers, with electronic acts like Jazzanova among those reworking their catalog over the years. The lineup has shifted considerably since the original trio of José Roberto Bertrami, Alex Malheiros, and Ivan Conti: both Bertrami and Conti have since passed away, leaving Malheiros as the sole original member steering the group forward. Their most recent album, Marca Passo, arrived on Far Out in 2025.
