About
Also known as: Babazula
BaBa ZuLa have been bending Istanbul's musical identity into something genuinely strange and captivating since 1996, and they've kept at it for nearly three decades without softening their edges. Their sound runs through psychedelic Turkish folk, dub, electronica and reggae, with the electric saz at the centre of it all. That instrument, a bright stringed staple of Turkish music, gets fed through both retro and cutting edge electronic effects to produce something that really doesn't sound like anything else. Founded as a side project of the Anatolian rock group ZeN, the band broke into wider international consciousness when Fatih Akin's documentary Crossing the Bridge put their music in front of a global audience in 2005. Since then they've played everywhere from the Roskilde Festival in Denmark to the Venice Biennial in Italy, and guests in their orbit have included legendary rhythm section Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, and Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten. Their most recent studio release, İstanbul Sokakları, came out in 2024.
