About
The New Yorker once called Balmorhea 'an exemplary experiment in restraint', and that description has stuck for good reason. The Austin duo of Rob Lowe and Michael Muller has been crafting minimalist instrumental music since 2006, drawing on a wide range of influences from Arvo Pärt and Max Richter to Tortoise and Gillian Welch. Over the years a rotating cast of musicians filled out their sound with cello, violin, vibraphone and more, giving each record its own texture. Their song 'Bowsprit' became the opening theme for the SundanceTV series Rectify, and their music has turned up in a Turkish film and a French film as well. After a five year break they returned in 2017 with Clear Language, and more recently signed to Deutsche Grammophon, releasing singles that fed into their albums The Wind and Pendant World. This newer chapter leans further into experimental and minimalistic territory, a noticeable shift from their earlier, lusher work.
