About
Also known as: Bang On A Can
Few ensembles cover as much ground as the Bang on a Can All Stars, the amplified sextet that grew out of New York's Bang on a Can organization in 1992. Built to be nimble where the parent org's massive Marathon concerts could not be, the group took on touring and recording work that would otherwise be out of reach, and they have since become what the San Francisco Chronicle called "the country's most important vehicle for contemporary music." Their instrumentation, clarinet, cello, electric guitar, piano or keyboard, percussion, and double bass, gives them a distinctive edge that sits somewhere between the concert hall and the experimental underground. Their catalog is genuinely wild in scope: reimagining Brian Eno's Music for Airports, diving into Terry Riley's In C, tackling Steve Reich's 2x5, and releasing records featuring collaborators from Burmese percussion master Kyaw Kyaw Naing to Czech vocalist Iva Bittová. Their debut on the Cantaloupe Music label, Renegade Heaven, was the New York Times' top classical album of 2001, and their recording of Julia Wolfe's Anthracite Fields landed a Grammy nomination in 2016.
