About
Michael Gordon is one of the driving forces behind Bang on a Can, the influential New York collective he co founded with composers Julia Wolfe and David Lang. His music sits at a fascinating crossroads of minimalism, dissonance, and rock energy, pulling from his time playing in underground rock bands and his formal training at Yale. Venues like Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and The Proms have all featured his work, and choreographers from Pina Bausch's company to The Royal Ballet have set his scores to dance. Some of his most striking pieces push at what instruments can even be. Timber, his percussion sextet, is scored for six standard two by four wooden boards and runs a full evening. Decasia pairs a large symphony with deteriorating found footage projected onto a pyramid structure surrounding the audience. His opera The Carbon Copy Building, a collaboration with comic book artist Ben Katchor, won a Village Voice Obie Award for Best New American Work.
