About

Also known as: Niedeckens BAP, Wolfgang Niedecken’s BAP

Thirteen number one albums in Germany is a remarkable run for any band, and BAP from Cologne have built that track record almost entirely by singing in Kölsch, the local dialect of their home city, or a Kölsch tinged version of Eifelplatt. Frontman Wolfgang Niedecken, who founded the group in 1976, draws heavily on Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks and Bruce Springsteen, and his most famous song, "Verdamp lang her", is a raw piece about regret over his relationship with his late father. The band name itself is a wordplay on the Kölsch word for dad. For decades the band's lineup shifted while Niedecken remained the constant, and the group eventually rebranded as Niedeckens BAP to reflect that looser setup. Their related projects show real range: a live anti racism concert album involving multiple Cologne bands, a Wim Wenders documentary about BAP, and Niedecken's solo album translating Bob Dylan lyrics into German. A 2020 music video for "Jenau jesaat: Op Odyssee" signals the project is still very much alive.
