About
Barasuara brought something fresh to the Indonesian rock scene when they formed in Jakarta in 2012, blending alternative rock with a pop sensibility that's hard to pin down. Their six piece lineup, anchored by vocalist and guitarist Iga Massardi alongside vocalists Puti Chitara and Asteriska, gave them a layered vocal texture that set them apart. Their debut album Taifun landed in 2015 and made an immediate mark, with "Bahas Bahasa" picking up the AMI Award for Best Alternative Production Work and the band earning Best Live Act honours at the Rolling Stone Indonesia Editors Choice Awards. Their third album Jalaran Sadrah, released in 2024, was built up through a run of singles including "Fatalis", which won Best Rock Duo/Group/Collaboration at the 2023 AMI Awards, and "Merayakan Fana", which featured an orchestral arrangement by Erwin Gutawa and the Czech Symphony Orchestra. They also opened for The 1975 on the Jakarta leg of the Music for Cars tour, a moment that showed just how far they had come in the Indonesian indie rock world.
